Raif Badawi, Saudi Arabian Writer and Activist turns 33 today.
Unfortunately he has had to spend his last 4 Years, 6 Months and 27 days in a prison cell because he believed in Free Speech and was bold enough to fight for Liberty.
On 17th June, 2012 Raif was arrested and charged with “insulting Islam through electronic channels” along with several other charges including apostasy.
Later in 2013 he was sentenced to seven years in prison and 600 lashes.
In 2014 his sentence was extended to 10 years in prison, 1000 lashes, and a hefty fine.
The first 50 lashes were administered on 9th Jan, 2015 amid global uproar.
He started a website called “Free Saudi Liberals” which called upon people to question the rigid implementation and interpretation of Islam. An action that should have had him hailed as a hero was seen as a threat by the Saudi Monarchy and his voice was silenced.
A few days after Raif’s trial, his wife, Ensaf Haider started receiving anonymous death threats and took refugee in Canada along with their two daughters and a son.
His kids and wife have not had a single word with him since that unfortunate day.
The only time they saw him was in a shaky cellphone video of him being flogged in Public.
Is this right?
That a family was torn apart and left devastated because a rigid dictatorial government wanted to desperately cling to their power wrought through misinformation and ignorance and powered by Religious Fanaticism?
Raif Badawi is a symbol of this struggle. A struggle to educate people and gain the freedom that we truly deserve.
Education is the most powerful weapon against them and it’s our duty towards Raif to keep it sharp and ready.
